Sell a Packaging Business

A seller resource from Louisville Business Brokers Group

Packaging buyers need to understand the orders, equipment, and production knowledge behind your earnings. A clear record of repeat work helps make that review useful.

Describe the production you actually provide

Explain whether the business converts materials, prints packaging, assembles products, or supplies finished goods. Separate work performed in house from work placed with another business.

A buyer needs to know where margin is earned and which capabilities depend on a particular supplier, machine, or employee. Avoid presenting every enquiry as recurring demand.

Show the repeat-order pattern

Build a customer and product summary that identifies repeat runs, project work, and seasonal orders. Include the effect of returns, rework, and customer credits.

Clarify who owns artwork, dies, moulds, and other tooling. Records should distinguish your equipment from items paid for or owned by a customer.

Connect equipment to saleable capacity

Prepare a machinery register with ownership, leases, maintenance, and known repairs. State what the line can currently produce rather than theoretical capacity it has never achieved.

Document bottlenecks and the skills needed to change jobs or keep output consistent. A capable supervisor can matter as much as another machine.

Explain material costs and earnings

Show how material price changes affect quotations and margins. If prices can be adjusted only at renewal, explain that exposure instead of treating last year's margin as permanent.

Support addbacks with invoices and a clear reason the buyer would not incur the same cost. Normal scrap, maintenance, and staffing should not disappear from the earnings picture.

Prepare the owner transition

List the estimating, purchasing, quality, and customer tasks you perform. A buyer will ask how that knowledge can be transferred without interrupting production.

Start the valuation request with your business type and revenue range. Detailed production files and customer artwork belong in a controlled diligence process, not the initial web form.
